Community Farm and City Market Project 2004

farm signThe 2004 season of the Community Farm and City Market Project has been completed. It was designed to provide land and other resources for local urban growers to produce and sell their farm fresh products at local farmers markets. There were over 35 households (more than 100 individuals) in the project this year from many different countries, and each individual or group has been given one or more 20 ft. X 20 ft. plots. This project was facilitated by Project Green Leaf with the support of North Carolina A&T State University as well as Guilford County Cooperative Extension Center. Our products were sold at the Center City Market* on Thursdays during the summer months. Many varieties of beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and eggplants were grown. Farmers also had herbs such as basil and parsley as well.

Community farming and direct marketing at farmers markets provides a place to create and strengthen community around locally grown food. Farmers market visitors have the opportunity to become more closely connected to their food providers –specifically the people who grew it.

* The Center City Market is located on the corner of N. Elm and Friendly Ave. at the new downtown Center City Park.
